The Digest

Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) are still on the force working for the Miami Police Drug Task Force. Their primary prey is a Cuban drug kingpin named Johnny Tapia (Jordi Molla) who with the help of a Russian mobster (Peter Stormare), is flooding the country with Ecstasy. The department has been sued 9 times by Tapia and they can never make any of the charges stick. This has caused the department to back off and not go after them like they should - well everyone has backed off but Mike and Marcus. To complicate things further is the Jamaican Gang-bangers who want to liberate Tapia's money from him and Marcus' sister Sydney (Gabrielle Union) who is an undercover DEA agent who has managed to infiltrate Tapia's inner circle.

How far will Tapia go to keep his drug empire and how far will Marcus and Mike go to rescue Sdyney?

The Dish

I've said before that Bad Boys is a movie that I'll look at if I'm flipping channels and nothing else is on. I'm not sure I can say the same for Bad Boys II. I was so unimpressed and underwhelmed by the whole thing. I was floored to hear Will Smith have a potty mouth. I don't think I've ever heard him use the "N"-Word and certainly not with that frequency and I don't think I've ever heard him curse that much. He's a grown man and can say what he wants, it just took some getting used to. But that was the primary problem. The script was mediocre at best. Most of the jokes fell flat and I found the constant bitching between the two of them to be tedious. I grew tired of their arguing with each other within 30 minutes because it was clever or smart. I could listen to Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau fuss and fight for hours, but Will and Lawrence got on my last nerve.

Being a person who lives for Summer movies, I can usually see myself through such drek and just appreciate it for the explosions and car chases. Not so with this one. I really was digging the car chase with Sydney, but everyone after that seem to just be thrown in there for the heck of it.

And lord will someone rein in Michael Bay? I'm sure he is a very talented individual, but I sure am tired of sitting through his movies that run 30-40 minutes too long. It doesn't make any sense for an action movie to be 2 and 1/2 hours long especially one as poorly written and executed as Bad Boys II. But I will say this much for Bay, he certainly knows how to shoot action sequences.

Gabriele Union handled herself well and that's about the only positive thing I can say about it.

The Directive

Bad Boys II is not the worst movie that's come out this summer, but it's not the best either and I wouldn't rush out to see it. You can safely wait for the DVD.

Flashing Red

The Boys aren't what's bad - it's the movie.
