CULVER CITY, CALIF. (February 6, 2006) – The romantic epic and six-time Academy Award® nominated film Memoirs of a Geisha debuts March 28, 2006 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment as a two-disc DVD and for PSP. Born from the creative vision of Academy Award®-nominated director Rob Marshall (Chicago) comes this beautiful adaptation of the New York Times best-selling novel by Arthur Golden. Starring Golden Globe®* and SAG** Award nominee Ziyi Zhang (House of Flying Daggers), Ken Wantanabe (The Last Samurai), Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Gong Li (2046), the film has been nominated for six Oscars®, including Best Art Direction, Cinematography, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Original Score and Costume.

Memoirs of a Geisha was awarded a 2006 Golden Globe® for Composer John Williams’ “Best Original Score.” The DVD will be available for an SLP of $28.96 and includes a rich line up of bonus features, such as audio commentaries with Director Rob Marshall and Choreographer John DeLuca, as well as 11 in-depth featurettes which capture the mesmerizing Japanese culture, including, “Sayuri’s Other Journey: From the Novel to the Screen,” “Geisha Bootcamp,” “The Music of Memoirs” and more.

Memoirs of a Geisha will also be released on the Universal Media Disc (UMD™) format that plays on the PSP™ (Playstation Portable) handheld entertainment system. The UMD™ of Memoirs of a Geisha is compatible with the Sony Playstation Portable ™ (PSP™), the first truly integrated portable entertainment system designed to provide consumers with a comprehensive mobile entertainment experience and to support multiple lifestyle applications including games, music, movies, communication and wireless gaming.

Set in a mysterious and exotic world which still casts a potent spell today, Memoirs of a Geisha begins in the years before World War II when a young Japanese girl, Chiyo (Suzaka Ohgo) is torn from her penniless family to work as a servant in a geisha house. Despite a treacherous rival, Hatsumomo (Gong) who nearly breaks her spirit, the girl blossoms into the legendary geisha Sayuri. Beautiful and accomplished, Sayuri captivates the most powerful men of her day, but is haunted by her secret love for the man, known as Chairman (Wantanabe), who is beyond her reach.

Memoirs of a Geisha was produced by Lucy Fisher, Douglas Wick and Steven Spielberg and written by Robin Swicord (screenplay; Little Women).
