The Green Mile

Email...we get email...lots of it. And though we appreciate (and respond to) all of it, some of the feedback we get on our reviews is particularly thought-provoking, and deserves a wide audience. To that end, we've included links to some of our favorite reader comments at the bottom of some of our 3BC reviews, where applicable. Be sure to check out the 3BC Movie Reviews archives for a list of reviews that include reader commentary.

Reader Feedback - by Heather Bigley
(WARNING: potential spoilers below)

I only just saw The Green Mile and I've been turning it over in my head. I was very interested in reading the 3BC reviews. (I've only recently discovered the site.)

Here's my take on the whole black/white saviour issue. It seemed to me that the white men were merely using John Koffe, exploiting him. John's role is to come around and clean up the messes left by the white people in charge of him. Everytime John heals someone, it causes him incredible pain. Yet, Paul decides that despite that, they're going to load this poor man up and drive him out to fix some woman. If they get caught, the guards lose their jobs, but John would probably be killed on sight. The whole idea seemed extremely callous and thoughtless on part of the guards. And what was their plan after that? Keep John on tap for later problems?

And then there is John's last wish: to see a flicker show. And they show him Fred Astaire-- whom, I agree, is a magical, talented wonder to behold. But it reinforced the whole black/ white conundrum. Before you die, let's show you our idea of white heaven.

There. Any thoughts?

[Bams' response: Interesting commentary. It didn't take into account the fact that John himself was a willing participant, but, interesting nonetheless. Would you mind if I posted your message as reader feedback?]

Then Heather sent the following response to my response:

Hey, thanks for your response.

My response to your response is: how unwilling can a black prisoner in a 1930's prison be? Post away.

[Bams' final response: Deep. Consider it posted.]
