The Haunting (1999) WARNING - SPOILERS BELOW.
The Digest Eleanor (Nell) has been taking care of her mother for the past 11 years. Her mother passes away and she feels a bit lost. Her sister and brother-in-law have told her that they are going to sell her apartment so too bad. She can come live with them and baby sit her nephew. She is rightly insulted. Then again that little boy needed a behind kicking anyway so maybe she should have taken them up on the offer. In fact her sister's family should have been dropped off at the Hill house and left there. But I digress. Nell gets a phone call telling her to apply for a research program on insomnia. Little does she and the other two participants know, the Dr. is really studying how people deal with fear and that is how they end up in the house. A few things happen over the course of the night right off the bat, mostly to Nell and no one believes her. After the initial "things that go bump in the night" the movie just fails to pick up speed. I spent the last 90 mins wondering when the good stuff was going to start happening. It didn't. The movie just becomes one bad special effect after the other. The ending is corny and predictable. Thank God I only paid $4.50 to see this movie, or The Diva would have a serious 'tude.
The Dish Well children what can I say ? First of all there is no way in HELL the sun would have set on my behind in that house after the first night. Period. Old houses aren't that "drafty" Had I been in the film it would have been over with in 45 minutes. The second the walls begin calling my name.... catch my smoke as I'm booking down the street. No discussion. I had such high hopes for this film. Suave Liam Neeson. Gorgeous Catherine Zeta-Jones. A pissed off house. But it was a complete let down. People were actually laughing at scenes I don't think were intended to be funny. Maybe it was a nervous laugh. But it was a bit weird. Now it is my job, if you will, to discuss/review the movie. I don't think that ones physical appearance should make or break a movie ( well Diana Ross had NO business playing Dorothy so that is an exception) but Owen Wilson "Luke" has had his nose broken and it was very crooked. The audience laughed every time there was a close up of him, it was distracting. I know he can't help it, but that big bent up nose coming across the screen was too much. The Directive I wouldn’t waste my time or money on this one.
