Hollow Man (2000) WARNING - SPOILERS BELOW.
The Digest
Sebastian Caine (Kevin Bacon), heading up a Super Secret Government Project (TM Bams), has managed to figure out how to make living things transparent. Fearing that he is about to lose funding, he wants to try it on a human and picks himself. The problem is that Caine was arrogant before and now that he is invisible he's even worse. The formula also makes you very aggressive. It becomes harder and harder to control him. The team wants to end the project so Caine sets out to kill them. Especially his second in command and former girlfriend, Dr. Linda Foster (Elisabeth Shue) and her new undercover boyfriend, The lead medical doctor Matthew Kensington (Josh Brolin).
The Dish
I rarely miss a Kevin Bacon movie. I like watching him walk away, know what I mean? But that wasn't enough. The special effects were pretty cool. But even that wasn't enough for me. The dialog was so bad that I couldn't concentrate on the visuals. Not to mention all the just plain stupid stuff that had me ready to kick the chair in front of me. Okay, we all know that a gorilla can break you in half in like 10 seconds, right? So why do you put your face up the cage when you can't see where it is? Why are you begging to have your head smashed? Okay so you put on the little goggles so you can see the gorilla, walk in the cage and leave the door open. Why are you acting surprised when she knocks your ass over and bolts? There is one black scientist in that group. Guess who is the first scientist to go? Follow me now - the black one (Mary Randle). So it's a "she" instead of a "he". It's the sista-rule instead of the brotha-rule. The fact remains the black person was the first to go. We can say one thing, for the most part, Hollywood is consistent.
Have you ever gone into a movie theater expecting so much and then you are so bitterly disappointed that all you can do is cuss and spit? Welcome to my world. Mattafact, Paul Verhoeven owes me yet another apology. I'm still waiting on one for "Starship Troopers" -one of the worst movies of 1997. I should also mention his other gem - Showgirls.
Paul doesn't write this mess, true enough, but he keeps attaching himself to these bad projects, seemingly giving them clout and raising our expectations. Well no more. The Div has learned her lesson. I'm going to his next movie anticipating a "Vertastrophy". I want to be surprised that it's good instead of upset that it's bad.

Before I sign off, I have to say, once again, how thrilled I am that I'm not reviewing Coyote Ugly. There were a bunch of 14 year olds in line. One had the nerve to have on a velvet evening dress on. Sweetheart, it's 90 damn degrees outside and next time wear a strapless bra. One of the girls remarked that a guy loved one of the girls. She said, "My God, everyone loves me." and she was dead serious.
Sweetie it's not your personality, trust me, it's your boobs. Then there were the boys. Why are 14 year old boys such dorks? At any rate, I'm just glad I didn't have to spend 90 minutes with them.
The Directive
Cable will pick it up in a year or so.
At times I wanted the whole film to be " hollow". See a matinee.
