The Digest

Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney), Pete (John Turturro), and Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson) are convicts on a Chain Gang in the rural south in 1937. The Three of them are dreaming of escaping in order to collect the money Ulysses has stashed away from the armed robbery he is in for.

They see an opportunity and break free. Lead by Ulysses, who is addicted to "Dapper Dan" hair grease, they set off on their journey, with the law hot on their trail, and have 4 days in which to grab the money, before a dam floods the valley. As they move along, it appears as though their trip will take them at least across the state, if not into the next one and along the way, they run into a remarkable cast of characters, most of whom have some kind of issue.

There is the blind man who tells them a riddle about their lives, the one-eyed salesman who pulls a fast one on them, the beguiling witch women who cast a spell on them, a blind record executive, and the guitarist who sold his soul to the devil. The list goes on and on.

Side note to My husband and Douglas: Thanks for all of the extra info. It really helped.

I really liked this movie. I didn't go into much detail in my digest section because there is so much going on and part of the enjoyment is trying to figure out which character in the film represents the which character in the original poem. It might help if you go here
first and read some cliff notes on the book. The movie is enjoyable without it, but I found that the audience members who had a clearer understanding of the Homer's epic, found the movie to be a lot more fun.

George Clooney is outstanding. John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson are equally wonderful as his dim-witted partners. Especially Tim Blake Nelson. He is so slow, it's cute and there is a part in the movie that involves him and a frog and I was rolling.

Because they aren't brothers, I had no clue where the title of the movie came from, until my friend Douglas explained to me that the title comes from a movie called "Sullivan's Travels" which is a story about a disillusioned comedy director who wants to make a serious movie called "O Brother, Where Art Thou?". "Sullivan's Travels" was directed by the legendary Preston Sturges. Welcome to the bizarre world of the Coen brothers.

Speaking of the Coen brothers, I really like them. "Fargo" is one of my favorite movies. They always seem to come up with something new and different. I'm always pleasantly surprised with their work.
