The Digest

Shrek (Mike Myers) is a grumpy Ogre who spends his days quietly enjoying his swamp. Every morning he wakes up; takes a mud bath; eats a few yummy bugs; then relaxes until dinnertime. His precious daily solitude is interrupted when he finds his beloved swamp over run by fairytale creatures that have been evicted from kingdom by the evil Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow). What was once a serene swamp has now been taken over by Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Old Women who lives in a shoe, Three Blind Mice, The big Bad Wolf, and every other fairytale creature you can think of.

Shrek is none too pleased about this so he sets out to find Lord Farquaad and give him the "what for". Along the way he picks up another banished creature, a talking donkey. Donkey (Eddie Murphy) wiggles his way into Shrek's life and invites himself along for the trip - much to Shrek's dismay. Despite Donkey's constant chatter, Shrek comes to grudgingly enjoy his company.

Once they reach Lord Farquaad, Shrek makes a deal with him. Shrek will rescue the fair Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) from a fire-breathing dragon and in exchange, Lord Farquaad will allow the fairytale creatures back into the kingdom.

Shrek rescues Princess Fiona with no problems and on the way back to Lord Farquaad they find out that they have a lot in common, and to their surprise, they begin to have feelings for one another. In order for them to be truly happy, they must decide if they can see past the outside and find the beauty within. They must also learn that you have to give love to receive love. A hard lesson to learn for us all.

The Dish

This movie was adorable! I wish I had children to drag to the movies with me to see it. It was funny and heartwarming with important life lessons for all children… Do not judge a book by its cover and look for the beauty within.

I was a little disappointed with Eddie Murphy's character. He was literally and figuratively a jackass. It was the same ole same… the wisecracking sidekick. But I ain't mad at him. It's a good movie and at least he wasn't the bad guy.

The animation was phenomenal. They looked almost real, and I was completely dumbstruck.

I'm starting to get a little tired of crass humor, but I'm sure all the kids will crack up and there is plenty to keep the adults laughing. They story was well written and flowed very nicely. The only hiccup was when Shrek started singing a song called "Hallelujah." It brought the money to a screeching halt. But the movie recovered shortly thereafter.

The Directive

Parents, spend a little time with your kids and go see this as a family. I'm sure everyone will love it.

A visually stunning animation masterpiece - Shrek is one heck of a movie.
