The Digest

Ben (Bruce Willis) and Katie (Michelle Pfeiffer) have been married for 15 years. They have 2 great kids, a nice home, careers they love. Everything is perfect except for their marriage. They fight over every little thing. The story is told from a therapist's couch via voice over and flashbacks. Katie needs organization and order in her life. Ben flourishes when things are chaotic. Katie has been able to deal with this for most of their marriage, but now she's tired of it. Ben is sick of being treated like a child and resents it. He is also tired of the lack of spontaneity in their relationship. They have been to several marriage counselors and nothing seems to work. With the kids away at summer camp they decide to separate.

What we learn is that neither one listens to the other. Ben doesn't hear that because of his "seize the day" attitude, Katie feels that she must keep everything flowing smoothly. He doesn't hear that Katie feels betrayed by the fact that Ben has a female confidante with whom he shared intimate details of his marriage. Katie doesn't hear that Ben just needed someone to talk to so he could better understand Katie. Katie doesn't understand that yes, Ben does want his needs met, but not above and beyond the kids as she accuses him. There is so much miscommunication that has gone on for so long, that neither one listens and hears the other anymore. What really touched me is the brave front they put up for the kids. If nothing else, it is clear that these 2 people love their children dearly

The Dish

I'm not sure how I felt about this movie. It was good, but it wasn't great I try not to get involved in the mechanics of the film (editing, cinematography, backdrop, etc) because I'm not expert, but it just didn't flow right for me. I think the editing was disjointed and we also had a funky copy so it jumped every so often. This kind of took away from my enjoyment.

I also felt there was a lot of needless cursing. Now I'm no prude, I can make a sailor blush, but beyond the fights and arguments, it seemed like the people were cussing for the sake of cussing. This movie was supposed to give a peek into adult relationships. It was as if they were saying when one becomes an adult, they sit around at the dinner table and say the "f-word" in causal conversation every 2 seconds. Maybe it's a cultural "thang" but I just couldn't feel it. Or hell it could be me. There are just some things I do not discuss in that manner with anyone other than my husband.

There are some pretty funny scenes in the movie. Rita Wilson (Mrs. Tom Hanks) steals the movie. Her diatribe about sex and female body will be remembered for years to come. The movie was enjoyable. But it was also very preachy. I think Rob Reiner was telling us that couples owe it to themselves to not stay together for the sake of the kids, but to stay together for the sake of the love the once felt for each other. Also to understand and appreciate that people change and grow and not to dwell on what happened to the woman/man you married "x" years ago.
