An Inconvenient Truth DVD

The Digest

"I'm Al Gore and I used to be the next President of the United States"

An Inconvenient Truth is a documentary that follows Al Gore around the world as he gives his lecture on global warming. Over 1000 times he has given his "little slide show" this little slide show as he calls it, is a frightening wake up call about the state of our environment.

What gave his lecture credibility for me is that for him, this was not the cause dujour. Meaning he didn't just jump on the bandwagon for political gain. Gore's political life didn't begin in 1992 when he won the vice-presidency. It began in 1976 and he planned to take Washington by storm (pun intended) he was planning on convincing his fellow representatives and the senators to start addressing the problem of global warming. This issue was brought to his attention 10-12 years earlier in college when he took a class given by Roger Revelle. Revelle, a renowned scientist, had been studying global warming and building up data for about 10 years at that point when Gore sat down in his class around 1968. My point being that the global warming has been a passion of his for nearly 40 years. and this passion is very clear.

What he presents convinces me that we have to get our crap together. This is not a "the sky is falling" type of propaganda film. But when he shows us what can happen with the warming trend, it's enough to make you want to go out and throw your car away. Like Hurricane Katrina, for example. He shows that the gulf waters have gotten much warmer due to the climate change and it is the warm water that boosted Katrina up from the category 1 it was over Florida, to the 3 that hit the gulf coast.

Are you willing to do what it takes to fix this situation? ?

The Dish

I really liked this movie. It was so thought provoking. What I took away from it was a sadness and an anger that he is not President Gore. He briefly talks about it and you can hear the pain in his voice. What happened to that man and John Kerry is a complete shame. Maybe they'll save us in 2008.

Back to the movie; thankfully, we do just about everything suggested and what we weren't doing, gas prices have necessitated that we do - except for buying a hybrid, which we can't afford and is impractical for our family. That said. You don't have to go out and buy a new car. You can buy new light bulbs and save 300 pounds of carbon dioxide each year. Often times, your energy company will give you the bulbs for free. And they aren't expensive. I 15 of them for $1 each. Yes, I spent only $15 bucks and I've already doing my part to save the environment.

You don't have to be a hippie tree-hugger. Just load your dishwasher properly, or use warm water instead of hot when you can.
