The Digest

Young JB (Jack Black), tired of living under the strict religious rules of his father, runs away to Hollywood. Of course he goes to several wrong states before he lands in Hollywood, Ca. where he meets KG (Kyle Gass). KG, a street performer, claims to have rocked out with several bands and belieiving him, JB idolizes him. This sooths KG’s ego and he invites JB to crash at his place.

They decide to form Tenacious D and quickly realize that to set themselves apart from every other band, they need to find the Pick of Destiny. They’ve figured out that all of guitar legends have used this guitar pick that folklore suggests was created from Satan’s tooth.

They set out to track the pick down and become one of the greats. But what happens when they find it and do they really need it? And to get it are they ready to do battle with Satan himself?

The Dish

Lord have mercy. Please. Okay let’s start off with saying something nice – I really liked the music. It’s just some classic hard rock, but as I’ve said before, Jack Black can sing. And he can rock out a guitar. So can Kyle for that matter. While they are performing, the movie is great. When they aren’t performing – not so much. When they weren’t performing, I frequently lost the will to live.

I’ve heard TD songs and I like them, but I’ve never seen them perform as Tenacious D from what I understand, the movie does not stray far from their shows and skits in terms of humor and language this means that if you love them and their shtick, then you are going to love this movie. If you are not already a big fan, you may be compelled to leave the theater during the second half-hour.

I really felt embarrassed for them because they gave it their all and it ended up being a hot mess. I found nothing about the F-Bomb being dropped every 2 minutes or so. It really loose its funny after awhile. Kyle and JB should really stick to music- which they do very well and steer clear of acting as Tenacious D. I have nothing but respect for Jack Black as an actor. I think he is quite good, but as half of TD? Blech.

The Directive

You’d be better served just buying the music CD or listening to it on Rhapsody. Don’t spend your money at the theater at this mess.

red light

Tenacious D should pick a destiny that doesn’t include movies. (ha ha).
