The Digest

Randy Daytona, a 12-year-old ping pong phenom is in the finals of the 1988 Summer Olympics. The fact that he is only 12 makes no difference to German player Karl Wolfschtagg (Thomas Lennon) who without mercy crushes Randy and his dreams. His father (Robert Patrick) who has a gambling problem, bet on Randy thus losing his money and unfortunately his head.

18 years later, Randy (Dan Fogler) is toiling away in a dinner theater and after causing a patron to have a heart attack (in a very funny scene), Randy loses his gig, but before he can even leave the premises, he is approached by FBI agent Rodriguez (George Lopez). Agent Rodriguez wants to recruit Randy to infiltrate a top-secret ping-pong tournament hosted by Feng (Christopher Walken. Feng is a triad boss and ordered the death of Randy's father.

Randy is rusty and needs intensive training. And Blind Master Wong (James Hong) is the man to do it - assuming Randy can stay focused on the game and not on Wong's beautiful niece Maggie (Maggie Q).

Before long, Randy is ready to take on opponents in Feng's tournament, but is he good enough to avoid death? Can he bring down Feng?

The Dish

I've said this before - sometimes you just need dumb. In the case of Balls of Fury you get really dumb. I found myself giggling and snorting once in a while. I think that is part of the problem the comedy was a little uneven. There were times I let out a GUFFAW and there were times I just wanted to leave.

This is the kind of movie to see only if you appreciate this kind of humor. It is brought to us by some of the same people who brought us Reno:911. If you can not appreciate that kind of humor, then just keep on going. This movie will not have cross appeal.

I could sit here and list everything wrong with it, but what is the point? You can look at the trailers and figure out that the demographic is 15-18. I can this much though Dan Fogler was inspired casting. He was so hapless and unassuming that it made it all the more amusing. And Thomas Lennon is crazy - in a good way. I've been in love with Christopher Walken for over 20 years- he can do no wrong.

The Directive

There are people who will think it is the funniest thing they have ever since. I advise you to not try to figure that out and just go see something else.

This is where I usually say something smart, but I'm missing some brain cells right now.
