The Diva's review of
Cougar Town DVD(2010)

The Digest

"Cougar Town" follows the lives of Jules Cobb (Courtney Cox, Friends), is a recently divorced 40ish mother of a teen-aged son, Travis (Dan Byrd, The Hills Have Eyes). She is owns a successful Florida real estate agency, so she is quite capable of taking care of herself and Travis, but for the first time in her adult life she is single and discovering herself.

She finally realizes that her ex, while a sweet heart, is really as dumb as a box of rocks. And as such is looking for the complete opposite of it and that turns out to be a younger man. With encouragement from her best friends are her neighbor Ellie (Krista Miller) and her younger employee, Laurie (Busy Phillips), Jules tries to wade out into the dating pool and while she manages somewhat she finds herself feeling most comfortable holding those close to her even closer - even her ex, purely platonic, of course, but he is happily back in her life. She adds her neighbor Grayson to the circle of friends even though she hates that her is a serial dater of young and dumb 20 year-olds, soon they start to have feelings for each other, but who wants to ruin a friendship by falling in love?

The Dish

The minute I heard this was by the folks who brought us "Scrubs" I was sold. I knew I was going to love it, and I do. I just didn't know how much. Like "Scrubs" it's about 15 minutes of pure silly and 6 minutes of thoughtful reflection. I really enjoy each and every character. From Andy (Ian Gomez), Ellie's much put upon husband, to Travis, who rightfully so, feels like he is the only sane one amongst the entire lot of them. I can't think of one time where I didn't laugh out loud during any episode. These people are my age and while some of their discussion are just too silly for anyone to identify with, I do  understand some of what they are talking about. For instance, I really understand as they struggle with being 40 and trying to keep current.
I have no desire to be 20 again, but I do try to listen to the music and I see the fashion or listen to the slang and I'm lost.
That said, I wish it was called something else. The series quickly evolved beyond her being a "cougar"
