Here's my unscientific list of performances that seemed like likely Oscar nominees ... but (often inexplicably) weren't. These aren't all necessarily my personal favorites (though most are) but ones about which there was some buzz and at least a reasonable expectation of a nomination in the air. Another one that comes to mind is Naomi Watts in "Mulholland Drive." Including both males and females, in both lead and supporting roles, I thought she gave one of the top three or four performances of 2001.

I agree with you on all counts. I mentioned To Die For above (it looked like an absolute shoo-in at the time) and I should've mentioned Eyes Wide Shut. She's the straw that stirs the drink in that erratic but compelling film (and Halle's got nothing on her in the nudity department!!).

Another film that I thought might get her a nomination was the tight suspense flick that introduced her to American audiences, Dead Calm (1989). She carried that cramped, controlled picture beautifully and made quite an impact (as an unknown, no less). Unfortunately, those types of films (and the performances within) aren't usually considered for the Oscar.

I've often found her too chilly and remote but, in the right role, she can make that work for her. Her ice maiden (with a slightly thawing heart) in the excellent Flirting (1990), which so memorably starred Thandie Newton and Noah Taylor, is yet another example of this.

I just watched The Color Purple again the other night and it reminded that Akosua Busia was most certainly deserving of a "Best Supporting Actress" nomination. Naturally, she was overlooked in favor of the flashier roles played by Oprah and Margaret Avery. Busia's parting "why, why, why" scene never fails to move me deeply. She dominates the early part of the film and exhibits a marvelous range.

I've always liked her (apple-cheeked gorgeous and immensely talented) but she's been terribly underused. I don't know what effect her ill-fated personal relationship with John Singleton (marriage, motherhood, and infidelity, I think) had on her career. Last I saw of her, in a significant role, was on a compelling ER episode of several years ago (1994!!), which featured Djimon Hounsou as her mate. She also was embroiled in a screenplay credit controversy over Beloved, which she won. She's listed as one of the 3 screenwriters because of an early draft she did. (She also appeared in Singleton's 1997 film, Rosewood, of course.)

You all have picked some tremendous performances that could have easily been nominated. Dreamer picked what was my all-time biggest disappointment - and in a very high profile film to boot: Robert Shaw in Jaws. Is there anyone who doesn't remember crusty ole Captain Quint? And his drunken description of the WW-II shark attack was unforgettable.

It seems as though a lot of great performances come in the supporting roles. There is where the juicy characters are, to help "color the portrait". Two more that were overlooked were Sam Rockwell & Dave Hutchinson as Wild Bill and Percy the guard in The Green Mile. Awesome performances.
