Okay, I remember that now.

I have a thread idea...favorite hot monkey love scenes. Or maybe just favorite (authentic, amusing, moving, disturbing) love/sex scenes.

Some recent ones:

*Diane Lane's performance in Unfaithful (various scenes)

*Isabelle Huppert's disturbing, but unforgettable performance in The Piano Teacher (various scenes)

*Wesley and Sanaa in the refrigerator in Disappearing Acts

Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland in Don't Look Now (1973) - Elegant and explicit. Still rare to see such "married couple" passion and sensuality portrayed on-screen.

Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange in The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981) - Groundbreakingly feral. Nothin' like some adulterous kitchen table-top lovin' with a stranger before sittin' down to dinner with your adoring hubby.

Emily Watson and Stellan Skarsgard in Breaking the Waves (1996) - Playfully passionate.

Kathleen Turner and William Hurt in Body Heat (1981) - Sweat-soaked and doom-laden.

You-Know-Who and What's-His-Name in You-Know-What (2001) - Primal. Desperate.

Okay, I thought of another one, not exactly a love/sex scene, perhaps. In Do the Right Thing always liked the scene with Mookie and... Tina {?}(Rosie Perez's character) in her apartment with the ice cubes on the hottest day of the summer.

John Cusack and Ione Skye in Say Anything (1989) - Who woulda thunk you'd ever see such tenderness, vulnerability and emotion (from the guy!!) in a teen, backseat boinking scene? A shivering, overwhelmed Cusack is more than memorable.

Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan in Love and Basketball (2000) - A friendly game of "strip" one-on-one serves as tantalizing foreplay, while the performers' real-life chemistry adds juice to a hot mutual-seduction scene that's even steamier in its extended version (on the DVD).

Hilary Swank and Chloe Sevigny in Boys Don't Cry (1999) - Poignant.

Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed in It's a Wonderful Life (1946) - Gives new meaning to the phrase "phone sex." In the dreamiest of close-ups the reluctant couple share a phone and, thanks to their sudden proximity, are soon overwhelmed with delirious passion for each other. Few scenes since have been able to match its "fully-clothed" (innocent) eroticism.

Good one! I'll have to check out the DVD.

On Lane in Unfaithful: The scene in which she sleeps with the French guy for the first time was powerful. Her conflicting emotions were so apparent and authentic and raw, I felt like a voyeur. Reminded me of Annette Bening's character in American Beauty. She wasn't conflicted about what she was doing (!), but the sex scene and the non-sexual scenes she played alone and frustrated, were so intense and personal, I felt like I should give her some privacy.

In the scene in Unfaithful on the landing of the stairs, Lane's character put me in the mind of a fiendin' junkie getting a fix. Hard to watch.

Maybe that's my standard for a good sex scene (vs. a gratuitous one): makes me want to look away instead of stare!

I wasn't a fan of this one, which suggests a corollary...not-so-great HML scenes:

Lisa Bonet and Mickey Rourke in Angel Heart.

Basic Instinct waiting for that icepick added to the tension.

Fatal Attraction in the sink, in the elevator ...

Risky Business a train heading through a tunnel was more than a metaphor here.

Jason's Lyric butt naked in a field.

The Fly (remake) before he goes through his "change."

You're absolutely dead-on. What's so terrific about Lane's performance during the sex scenes is her ability to convey a full range of realistic emotion, from body-revealing shame to sexual embarassment to naughty-girl excitement to full-on passion, in the most economical of brush strokes. This is particularly evident in the scene outside the apartment where you can almost literally "feel" her good sense doing battle with her newfound desire to submit to a daring sexual thrill. The "thrill" wins out but, as you said, we feel uncomfortably close to the intimacy (and therefore, like co-conspirators in her dangerous fling).

My favorite scene though was when she rides the train back home after her first encounter and, in a steady single shot, we watch her relive her entire experience, in all its positive and negative facets, through her eyes and expressions. It's a beautiful piece of unadorned acting that easily solidified her well-deserved "Academy Award" nomination.

That was my favorite overall scene as well.

An otherwise excellent film was ruined by the sudden turn of events and the ending.

Yeah, it's easy to forget how controversial this was in '87. Not only was Bonet a Cosby girl (and barely 19 when the movie was shot) but the scene was so graphic that the flick flirted with an "X" rating for a bit. She actually wasn't bad doing her Louisiana(?) "Lolita" thing, exuding an earthy and confident sexuality at times, but the scene's "chickens and blood"(!!) motif (not to mention a filthy Mickey Rourke) ultimately made the feverish encounter more farcical than sensual.

Was it all worth it to Bonet? She got a pretty good flurry of publicity at the time, but little real support. She ended up running back to a disappointed Cos and the safety of the show.

I have no problem with young (or old) actresses taking these kinds of chances on-screen, but in this case, I think Bonet simply gave up too much of herself too soon. It smacked of a running-away-from-home "stunt" and left her with no place to go on-screen (other than, perhaps, to more such sexualized performances). She wisely retreated.

Better to hold back a bit on these things if you have a complex public image to nurture, or at least try to avoid the combination of Mickey Rourke, voodoo and ... chickens!!

Still, it was a very interesting moment in time when the innocent world of sitcom families crossed paths with brazen big screen sexuality. A classic pop culture freeze-frame.

I love this thread, D. Keep it comin' y'all.

Speaking of, my idea of a good sex scene (HML or not) is that it gives me, um, inspiration. Ideas, if you will. These two favorites aren't all that hot, nor inspirational, but you guys picked so many goodies already that I'm just left with these so far:

Rene Russo and Pierce Brosnan in The Thomas Crowne Affair. As Diva said in her review, it was refreshing to see two mature people be portrayed as passionate creatures.

(and one I'm sure to be ribbed about)

The "car scene" with Nia Vardalos and John Corbett in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Maybe it's Just Me, but I found that kind of sweet, chaste passion, very sexy.

Here's a couple...

Eminem and Brittany Murphy in "8 Mile". Simple, minimalist, raw and very realistic.

Nicole Kidman and Ben Chaplin in "Birthday Girl", which I truly feel is one of the most underrated movies of the last few years. Their scenes together are passionate and moving. Check it out if you haven't seen it (and I know you haven't, no one has).

And though no actual nookie is witnessed, can't top George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez in "Out Of Sight" for pure, hot sexual chemistry.

Okay...I've been silent long enough.

First of all, I will NOT be seeing "Unfaithful". I have Issues with that particular subject matter. And, as much as I liked "Fatal Attraction" back in the day, I'm reluctant to watch that again, too. More Issues...pertaining to this gold object that's occupying my finger and the personal symbolism of said object...

(yeah I know...i'm taking things too far...)

Anyway: hot monkey love moments:

The aforementioned "You Know What". I said it before and I'll say it again: That wasn't lust. That was f***ing pain!

Mo Better Blues: Wesley Snipes & Cynda Williams on the balcony. And all of us in the theatre said "GAWDDAYUM!!!"

Jason's Lyric: the scene in the field was beautiful...but the scene in the TV shop on the counter with the pouring rain in the background was another "GAWDDAYUM" moment!

Basic Instinct: the whole damn movie! I keep threatening to show this to Mrs. Utz...who has never seen this. Me thinks she'll become a fan of scarves after seeing that one.

And...lastly (for now)...the moment (IMHO) that took Black Sexuality to a whole new level:

Pam Grier's disrobing as part of her initiation into King George's stable in "Coffy". Makes me drool and shiver just thinkin' bout it!

The younger pair of Dunaway and McQueen were no slouches in the glossy original either. The artfully-filmed chess-as-foreplay scene was considered extremely sexually provocative at the time.

Not a fan of the film, but that scene definitely does work. Now everyone knows that gently holding the back of a woman's head in your hands while kissing her will make her positively swoon.

Other memorable "older" couples ...

Paul Newman and Helen Shaver in The Color of Money (1986)

Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood in The Bridges of Madison County (1995)

Julie Bovasso and Louis Guss in Moonstruck (1987)

Not "older," but decidedly offbeat ...

Isabella Rosellini and Kyle MacLachlan in Blue Velvet (1986)

Good ones mentioned so far--Some classics, in fact. More I'd like to add:
(Warning-Some of these might be a LiL explicit for certain tastes)

Jo Shushido and Mariko Ogawa in Branded to Kill-They bump'n'grind from the tub to the staircase with quick cuts of the couple in various positions. "We are Beasts"! she yells out.

Nathaniel Parker and Rowena King in Wide Sargasso Sea-Best middle-of-the-night quickie I've seen yet! Very fast and very hot. NC-17 version goes on a little longer.

James Spader and Deborah Unger in Crash-There's always something interesting about talking about sex while you're having it..Right? But the dirty language that Catherine (Unger) spits out while the 2 steam up the sheets, takes this act to a whole 'nother level.

The Brazilian couple in Wild Orchid-Forget the much talked-about encounters with Mickey Rourke & Carrie Otis. The sounds and the photography that get captured in the film's first sex scene is the one to watch for.
Combine the brilliant lighting of the black and beautiful bodies with a background waterfall splashing on every inch on their naked selves during stimulated sex makes for...Quite a sight..Indeed.

Seems pretty natural to me.

Can't remember now if that point was brought up in the movie itself or on Vardalos' commentary track about the scene. Must have been the latter. Her enthusiastic promotion of this simple act, as a way to win over a woman's heart, stayed with me. Don't remember if she said it was scripted (to show a certain tenderness) or if it was just Corbett's own style (which she much appreciated).

Oh, and if you check out the new issue of KING with Vivica on the cover, they got a special section:
quote:

Hollywood’s 34 1/2 Sexiest Moments in Movies
Tired of Hollywood scaling back on nudity? Well we are. KING compiled 34 1/2 flicks that remind us of the way things were.

Of course, some of the selections mentioned in this thread made the cut. But there's a few others I forgot about. Like the "Reaching-for-his-pants" scene in Colors!!!
At least Leon went out bustin' LOLZ!!!!
